A friend of mine, the Rev. Mark Story, believes that we have gone back about 500 years in our discussions concerning authority in the church. African Anglicanism is asserting a highly Protestant form of authority by claiming a “sola scriptura” model and rejecting key elements of the Enlightenment while Roman Catholicism is reasserting the authority of the Pope, as evidenced by the Pope's most recent pronouncement that Christianity outside the Roman Catholic church can not properly be thought of as "church" at all. So, my question, are we reliving the reformation or some form of it?

So is Sola Scritura removing the other two legs of our Anglican stool?

Yes, though Anglicans maintain that Scripture contains all things necessary for salvation, historically we have relied on the wisdom of our "3-legged stool" of Scripture, Reason and Tradition. It is interesting to me that those who proclaim Anglicanism the loudest are those who also proclaim the loudest that Scripture alone is the source of our wisdom and authority (and a particular reading of Scripture at that). In my humble opinion, that is not Anglican.
after reading Mother Rita's background plus John & josh's comments I predict a continued thotful exchange of new insights! Fred W Hood
